CrossFit has grown massively in recent years. Whether you’re joining a gym for the first time or finding a new gym in a new city, you’ll want to ask some key questions to ensure you’re in the right place. After all, quality is key.
While CrossFit can change your life, the right CrossFit gym can make that process even more enjoyable.
Here are four questions to ask before you join a gym:
1. What is your philosophy on intensity?
Any coach knows intensity is key for fitness adaptation. They should respond, however, with the importance of relative intensity. Dig into their strategies for scaling movement and their use of progression.
2. What is CrossFit?
This is an important question because you ought to know. While the definition is elegantly simple, they should be able to elaborate. If they don’t, ask them to. What are functional movements? How is the training varied? And what constitutes intensity? Their ability to be thorough and speak simply may give insight to their ability to coach.
3. Describe your programming process.
If they write their own programming, ask them whether they critique each other. Do they just vary movements? Considerations should be made for energy systems. High and low skill movements, time domain and numerous other factors should be considered.
4. Ask them how they can configure their training to your limitations.
If you have injuries or deficiencies, ask how they plan to progress movement, teach you new skills and keep you moving in the class. Good coaches take this as a point of pride and will have many strategies to be inclusive.
Shop around. Finding the right gym is important!
