Paleo in a Nutshell

Thousands of years ago, mankind did not have Twinkies, instant mashed potatoes or microwave popcorn. All they had was what they could whack with a rock, dig up from the earth or gather from their surrounding environs. Such is the theory behind the Paleo diet, which emphasizes natural and organic meats, fish and shellfish, roots, nuts and locally grown fresh produce. The diet excludes more “modern” developments like dairy products, grains, legumes, refined sugar and processed oils, all of which were introduced when the agricultural age began and the Paleolithic age ended some 10,000 years ago. The idea: Our bodies evolved to eat these basic foodstuffs, so getting back to our nutritional roots and weeding out newer dietary additions promotes health and performance. (Though we bet even the staunchest cave man wouldn’t pooh-pooh a little dark chocolate now and again.)

Me Need More Food

While most of these meals should fill you to the brim, sometimes you might need a little extra fuel to stoke your fire, especially on hard workout days. Here is a list of handy portable snacks to toss down your gullet throughout the day when you feel the need to nosh:

  • Fresh raw fruit (apples, pears, oranges, grapefruit, berries)
  • Whole raw nuts (cashews, almonds, peanuts, walnuts)
  • Whole raw seeds (sunflower, chia, pumpkin)
  • Fresh raw veggies (carrots, celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots)
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Natural organic beef or turkey jerky
