The Popularity of the Ketogenic Diet

Not only has it been trending on Google for 14 months, but it also doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon.


Back in early January, Motherboard posted an article showcasing the popularity of the ketogenic diet on Google Trends. During the course of the past 14 months, interest in the diet has reached its peak popularity, and it doesn’t look like it’s going away anytime soon.


The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, almost no-carb, moderate-protein diet that transforms how your body metabolizes fats. Several of the key benefits to the ketogenic diet include higher satiety, increased energy and fat loss. Unlike other viral diets, the ketogenic diet has roots almost a century deep.

A high-fat, minimal-carb diet was first introduced as a way to treat epilepsy, and it is still used today for children who don’t respond properly to epilepsy medications. So how did a diet like this go dormant for so long only to re-emerge as a tour de force today?

Hollywood producer Jim Abrahams began the Charlie Foundation in 1994 after the ketogenic diet helped treat his son’s seizures. Since then, the foundation has grown as an educational resource for people who wish to learn more about the diet. It sponsors and follows treatments outside the realm of epilepsy that include cancer, autism, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, Type 2 diabetes and traumatic brain injuries. The Epigenix Foundation was created by Quest CEO Ron Penna as a way to harness the popularity of the diet and study the metabolic effects of a ketogenic diet on patients with diabetes and certain types of cancers. Basically, it’s a summit for scientists, doctors and nutritionists to forge new ways to use metabolic therapy to supplement or treat a wide array of disorders.
